Opening Interference

We are happy to welcome you to the duo exhibition Interference with artists Jan Kuhlemeier & Krijn Kroes, opening on the 25th of June from 19:00 until 21:30.

Intrigued by nature and its majestic features, the work by Jan Kuhlemeier and Krijn Kroes both share an element of intangibility which is made tangible through their exploration of reflections, light and material characteristics, always with a layered use of colours at the base. Whereas Jan tries to grasp the physical geographical qualities of the elements and make natural phenomena visible to the viewer, Krijn uses elements from nature as a persisting inspirational source with which he aims to trigger the imagination of its spectators. Conducting research on the material and visual characteristics of paint and colour nuances, allowed these artists to create multi-layered paintings which share an element of depth. Something below the surface, as light and dark, transparent and opaque alternate. But also in terms of what you experience besides what you see. Personal fascinations and experiences with the natural world are translated into strong compositions, each unique in their approach.

Fascinated by natural phenomena, Jan Kuhlemeier aims to translate the natural energies, motions, and colours of his own personal experiences of landscapes into a visual image or object, using gestures that are determined by Jan in advance. The endless repetition of energies create a continuous change in the design of landscapes. The various motions and structures both work against each other and complement each other, constantly shaping and changing the environment. This influences the way Kuhlemeier uses his colours and materials. He has done a lot of research into the ways in which various semi-transparent colours layered on top of each other can create specific hues. In this colour based research Jan aimed at creating hues that he sees in the reflection of seas and oceans around the world. Water can look very dark and opaque for instance, as the wind or strong currents wash up the sand. In contrast, it can also look very transparent and clear. Alternating between translucent and deep opaque layers of colours allows him to visualize this. Elements of painting are used as a tool to interact with his surroundings and also to question the border between other media, like sculpture.

For Krijn Kroes, art and nature go hand in hand. Ever since he was young, the natural world and the effects of light have triggered his imagination which is reflected in his artistic practice. This can be in the form of a pattern of plants and animals, but also in abstract translations whereby the direction of the brushstroke and the characteristics of the paint play a role in how the light moves across the canvas. By playing with colors, like deep and dark ones on which the light reflects the best, not only what you see is altered, but also the ways in which you do so. By working with this element of reflection, he aims to convey an experience personal to the viewer. A layer of mysticism and irrationality that is important to his artistic practice. He is constantly looking for ways to engage his audience by generating a sense of wonder and curiosity towards the unknown, intending to trigger the imagination of spectators throughout his monochrome and reflective paintings.

After the opening the exhibition can be visited until the 14th of August 2021.
