‘The Calm’ at Art23 in Guangzhou

Currently on view at Art23 in Guangzhou (China) are works by Donald Schenkel as part of their newest exhibition ‘The Calm 帕罗西汀’.

‘帕罗西汀’ is a medicine used to treat depression. It has the effect of relieving symptoms of anxiety and depression. It is a playful translation of the English title ‘The Calm’.

For this exhibition Donald focussed on a series of new paintings on linen, exploring combinations of oil paint that play with the contrast between subtlety and vibrant colours. The consequent softness in transitions and colour use bring calmness into these works. A certain intuitive experience associated with peace and tranquility. 

In his artistic practice, Donald creates subtle colour gradients, seeking for smoothness in his compositions while exploring the simplicity and depth of material. Ancient principles from the art of paintings are translated into an almost minimal use of materials. By studying the characteristics of oils and pigments, the subtle colour transitions are taken to a new level, in order to express the feeling of purity.

‘The Calm’ by Art23 Contemporary Art Gallery tries to provide the audience with an opportunity for emotional communication. By experiencing the artworks, people can relieve depression and anxiety, explore the dialogue between themselves and the soul, and find inner peace.
