Finissage New Group Show
On April 22, from 15:00 until 18:00, you are welcome to join us at the finissage of the New Group Show. Many of the artists will be present to tell you more about their work.
As a gallery, we are happy and grateful for the many beautiful projects and exhibitions that we are able to realise together with the artists. The characteristics of the gallery space really sparked the creativity of the artists and allowed them to create site-specific installations and experiment with different formats and materials.
To show the developments of the artists, we organized a group exhibition with the work of all Root’s represented artists. As this turned out to be such a success, we decided to organise another group exhibition. The new group show brings together a variety of new and existing works. Transformations in the exhibitionspace create a renewed experience for visitors whereby sculptural work, paintings, photography and kinetic installations form a dynamic, cohesive whole between the artists' practices.
The exhibition features work by Donald Schenkel, Jan Kuhlemeier, Sophie de Vos, Quinda Verheul, Saïd Kinos, Lisette Schumacher, Freerk Wilbers, Jochem Esser and Karen van de Vliet.

By Sophie de Vos
30 x 45 cm, 2021
Proline Vibrant Satin 290 gr on 2 mm Dibond
Edition 2/6
Laying foundations can be described as a precursor of Sophie’s later stilllives such as Where The Field Meets The Forest (2021) and Reaching Down Within (2023). Both works are about balance and our relationship with nature. Sophie de Vos combines found materials from nature and balances them with a piece of plaster or clay. This still life evokes a sense of calm, despite the fact that the structure could collapse at any moment.

Reaching Down Within is a continuation - or addition to - the earlier work Where The Field Meets The Forest. Both works are about balance and our relationship with nature. Sophie de Vos combines found materials from nature and, as it were, glues them with a piece of black clay. In this work, the clay and the piece of rock form an almost yin yang shape, working together to keep the dried flower upright. This still life evokes a sense of calm, despite the fact that the structure could collapse at any moment.

Where The Field Meets The Forest, I Was Walking With My Eyes Closed is a work by Sophie de Vos, rooted in her ongoing fascination with what it means to be human. Recurring themes in her practice - such as the passing of time, transience, decay, and loss - find a quiet, poetic expression in this piece.
A dried flower rests gently on a stone, supported by a sculpted layer of black clay. This minimal arrangement holds a quiet intensity: the fragility of the flower, the weight of the stone, and the raw tactility of the clay form a delicate balance. As in much of her work, Sophie uses minimal visual means to distil complex emotions and existential questions, inviting the viewer to slow down, and to feel rather than interpret.Shipping within the Netherlands and Belgium is on us.
By Quinda Verheul
80 x 30 cm, 2022
Black mirror and concrete
Quinda Verheul immerses herself in the constantly changing landscapes and the influence that humans have on them. She is fascinated by natural forces like wind, water and sunlight, and often addresses grand topics like the exploitation of natural resources which alter the landscape. Yet, there are different aspects to the same topic which Quinda explores in different series. This is reflected in her use of raw, earthy materials such as sand and natural stone. Mirrors form a returning metaphorical element in her sculptures and installations which invite spectators to reflect on themselves while simultaneously exploring different perspectives. The results are unique aesthetic translations which are able to present new confrontational information within a certain comfort.
Delivery in the Netherlands and Belgium is complimentary and arranged with care, either in person or via secure shipment.
