Troika (2025) is a large abstract oil painting by artist Donald Schenkel. Known for his refined colour gradients and exploration of light and perception, Schenkel creates depth and movement through countless translucent layers of oil paint.
In this work, vertical fields of red, yellow and violet rise through a sea of turquoise tones, evoking both reflection and energy. The composition suggests a horizon or a reflection in water, yet remains entirely abstract, inviting viewers to experience colour as emotion rather than image.
Schenkel’s process combines traditional oil-painting methods with a contemporary sensitivity to material and light. Each layer is applied and blended by hand, allowing subtle shifts in tone and transparency to emerge. The result is a painting that feels meditative and precise, where light seems to exist within the surface itself.
