Madelon Uljee
Handcrafted leather wall sculptures for contemporary interiors
Madelon Uljee creates sculptural leather works inspired by the hidden structures found in nature. Under the name Architectural Flora, she translates details such as leaf veins, droplets and organic patterns into abstract forms that range from intimate wall pieces to larger site-responsive installations.
More about the artist
Working primarily with leather, often sourced from surplus materials from the high-end fashion industry, Uljee shapes each work by hand. Rather than working from fixed sketches, she allows the material itself to determine the direction of the process. Folding, tension and surface become part of the final composition, giving each work its own character and rhythm.
The flexibility of leather allows Uljee to create forms that respond differently throughout the day as light moves across their surfaces. Colour, depth and shadow play an important role, making the works feel closely connected to the architecture in which they are placed.
Alongside autonomous works, Uljee increasingly develops larger pieces in dialogue with a specific environment. Scale, colour and composition can be adapted to residential interiors, hospitality projects and corporate spaces, allowing the work to become an integrated part of its surroundings rather than an object placed against a wall.
Her practice brings together craftsmanship, material sensitivity and a growing interest in the relationship between sculpture and architecture. Whether experienced in a private home or as part of a larger project, each work reflects an ongoing fascination with the structures that shape the natural world.
Through Architectural Flora, Uljee enlarges details that often go unnoticed, revealing the structures and patterns that underpin the natural world.
