Commission a site-specific artwork

A work that feels like it was always meant to be there.

Some artworks begin with a blank canvas. Others begin with a particular location. What kind of work would fit here; in this hallway, above this sofa, in that quiet corner?

At Root Gallery, we regularly guide seasoned collectors, first buyers, interior designers and companies through the process of commissioning a bespoke piece of art. Whether you’re looking for a painting, a sculpture, a statement space for your garden, or something else, we help you find the right artist and shape the process in a way that feels natural, personal, and clear.

Most of our artists love to create artworks in commission, and we’re honest when something’s not the right fit. No templates, no one-size-fits-all. Just thoughtful collaborations, guided from first conversation to final placement.

What to expect

Step 1 – We talk

We usually start with a quick call. It helps us get a sense of your space, your taste, and what you’re looking for, even if it’s not fully formed yet. This is mostly on the phone.

Step 2 – Sketch ideas

Based on your input, we create quick digital sketches. Often with different artists in mind, so you can get a feel for how the work might live in your space.

Step 3 – You choose the direction

If something clicks, we take the next step. That could be a visit to the gallery, a studio appointment, or just another call. Whatever suits you best.

Step 4 – The artist creates

Once the work is underway, we’ll keep you updated. Some clients like to check in along the way with a studio visit, others prefer to be surprised. Either way, we’ll make sure you're involved as much or as little as you like.

Step 5 – Final check

When the artwork is finished, we’ll send you photos of the piece, or you’re welcome to see it in the artist’s studio.

Step 6 – Framing, delivery and installation

If framing is needed, we’ll discuss what suits the piece best. Then we set a date for delivery and installation. Both are included, free of charge within the Netherlands and Belgium.

A commissioned piece isn’t just made to measure. It’s made with care, for your space, your rhythm, and your way of seeing.
