Only since the beginning of 2019, Donald has been painting on canvas, after which he stretches them; this makes them paintings. However, Donald always views his works as objects first. His new works are a result from a new research into the approach of paintings as objects. The immaculate colour transitions which characterise Donald Schenkel’s oeuvre melt together with large wooden bases, inviting viewers to view the works from different angles.The wooden beams will vary in size, creating a more dynamic whole within the exhibition, almost as if the gradients are worn on a pedestal. Gradients follow the shape of the wooden base, allowing the light to travel to different parts of the work, resulting in the oil paint to expose different tones of its colour.
