Mixed acrylic paint on cotton, framed
In the Bubblegum series, Karen van de Vliet investigates painting as a physical process. Thick layers of paint are built up into a textured surface that extends beyond the traditional flat canvas.
Using a dense material, Van de Vliet constructs a surface in which gesture and structure become inseparable. The accumulated paint creates a relief-like composition that reveals traces of movement and repetition. The work shifts between painting and object, depending on the viewing distance and the light falling onto the surface.
The soft pink tones contrast with the weight of the material, creating a balance between lightness and density. The colour draws the viewer in, while the textured surface invites a closer look.
Within this series, paint is treated as a substance with its own presence, giving the work a distinctly tactile and spatial quality.
