Emma Veulemans

Bold paintings and drawings emerging from a positive form of naivety.

Emma Veulemans is a visual artist with a background in graphic designs and illustration which continues to be an important starting point in her practice. She creates paintings and drawings that balance fields of colour, with bold lines and contrasting contours. Her practice explores the tension between playful, cheerful compositions and carefully layered surfaces, revealing the making of each work while inviting viewers into a vibrant visual world.

More about artist Emma Veulemans

Working across painting and drawing, Emma has developed a distinctive visual vocabulary rooted in her background in graphic design, with a particular focus on illustration. Line and structure remain fundamental elements in her practice, where bold, often unnatural fields of colour contrast with sharp contours that originate from observations of the natural world.

Emma’s seemingly cheerful works emerge from a positive form of naivety which translates into colour and form. A closer look reveals the layered process behind each painting: as light falls across the surface, traces of the underlying composition that were necessary to come to the end result become visible. Rather than concealing them, they’re deliberately exposed.

Driven by a continuous desire to evolve, Emma consistently challenges herself to explore alternative approaches and expand her artistic language, seeking new ways to translate her creative vision into image.
