For this series, Lisette Schumacher works with the shape of the arch as a framing device. Historically used in Roman and Renaissance architecture to construct and articulate space, the arch is no longer structurally necessary in contemporary building methods.
In Arch II, the form is reintroduced within the painting as a visual structure, shifting its function from construction to image.

This series focuses on sunrises around the iconic Griffith Observatory.

Griffith Observatory’s unique architecture, setting and cinematic exposure have made it one of the most famous landmarks in southern California. Typically identified as Art Deco with both Moderne and Modified Greek influences and a Beaux-Arts influenced plan. The planetarium offers the best view to simply gaze out towards the coast and the heavens. Lisette Schumacher watched the sunrise from the Griffith Observatory on August 20 in 2024.

Inspired by the rich palette of colors unfolding in front of her eyes, from the quiet soft pastel tones right before sunrise to the warm and rich colors of the sun and its reflections on the sides of the skyscrapers in Downtown, Lisette dedicated a series of paintings depicting the various stages of the sunrise drawn up on carriers with landscape frame, enhancing the cinematic viewing experience from the Griffith Observatory.

Lisette Schumacher’s interest lies in the idea that architecture engenders a basic physical experience prior to also initiating an intellectual interpretation. By observing the location intensely and moving through each room repeatedly, she can both experience the space in a physical way and interpret it intellectually. After studying the site's history and architect, a period of in-depth research into technique, material and colour schemes follows. This results in a series of works that reflect on the site's atmosphere, history and its design.

From the series View On Sunset

Lisette Schumacher is a visual artist with a strong interest in modern architecture. Her fascination has led her to numerous architectural sites across Europe and the USA. Currently, her practice focuses on mid-century modern architecture in Los Angeles. While her artistic practice primarily revolves around painting, she has also explored the realms of sculpture and installation. Lisette’s work is part of corporate and private collections in Europe, the United States, and Asia. Lisette’s interest lies in the notion that architecture provides a fundamental physical experience before leading to intellectual interpretation. On location, she thoroughly observes the construction of spaces, taking note of their shapes and dimensions and paying special attention to how light is optimised for the user. Through intense observation and by moving through each room repeatedly, Lisette absorbs the atmosphere, experiencing the space physically while also interpreting it intellectually. Following this immersive exploration, she delves further into the site's history and the architect's background, conducting in-depth research into techniques, materials, and colour schemes. This process enables her to create a series of intriguing abstract works that reflect the site's atmosphere, history, and design. Lisette’s approach combines a deep appreciation for architectural details with a nuanced understanding of their historical and cultural contexts, resulting in art that captures the essence of the spaces she studies.

From the series Sunset at Woods Drive

During Fall 2023 (September - October), Lisette Schumacher returned to Los Angeles for a second residency. She revisited the Stahl House twice during sunset and witnessed an exciting transition in the appearance of the house. The Stahl House is located in the Hollywood Hills and was designed by Buck Stahl and Pierre Koenig in 1959-60. The residence has become the figurehead of modern architecture in Los Angeles.

During previous daytime visits, her experience of the Stahl House was dominated by reflections due to the affluent presence of glass and water. During the sunset, however, what stood out were the mesmerizing colour transformations. Lisette sat down on a sofa in the living room overlooking the pool, and watched the sunset at the house. By consciously observing the gradual disappearanceof daylight, Lisette witnessed the colour transition taking place in and around the house.

The colours in the sky displayed vibrant gradients of yellow, orange, pink and purple, especially during the short period of twilight. With the sun setting, the house turned dark and the sky shifted in different hues of blue, finally displaying a deep night blue. After sunset, the house was subtly lit with large round glass lamps suspended by invisible wires which provided a surrealistic sight of multiple full moons. The pool lit up brightly providing a stark contrast with the subdued colours of the exterior of the house.

The Sunset series consists of paintings that showcase the different stages of the sun setting., Various colour combinations, both bright and subdued, depict the transition from twilight to sunset.

From the series Novel Trailing Reflections

Endless reflections of sun on glass and water were the starting points to create Lisette Schumacher’s Trailing Reflections series. During her residency in Los Angeles (April – May 2022) she visited The Stahl House, located in the Hollywood Hills. It was designed by Buck Stahl and Pierre Koenig in 1959-60. She was stunned by the pure beauty and tranquility of the Stahl House. During her stay, Lisette noticed an intriguing play of reflections in the glass facades of the home, caused by the water of the swimming pool and the reflections of the sun. She wanted to create a body of work that would visualize her observations and bring an ode to the family home, built from glass and steel. The Stahl House has become the figurehead of modern architecture in Los Angeles. She picked the color palette based on the local rocks, succulents, interior and the swimming pool.
