Freerk Wilbers has been quietly developing a new body of work, and it begins with Full Moon. This artwork marks an important step in his practice. The piece is more intimate and collectable in scale, while still preserving the sense of movement, illusion, and wonder that defines Wilbers’ artistic approach.
Full Moon was created from a studio investigation into the moiré effect, the visual phenomenon that occurs when two similar, but not identical, patterns overlap. This effect produces dynamic, ever-changing images in the space between the grids.
The moon itself isn’t physically present; it appears only in the eyes of the viewer. The printed patterns on either side of the glass remain completely still, yet as the observer moves, a shifting optical illusion comes to life. With Full Moon, Freerk Wilbers demonstrates how perception, movement, and material can intersect, creating a contemporary artwork that resonates both conceptually and visually.
