From the series Spatial Shade
For this series of glass sculptures, Lisette Schumacher uses the form of the brick as a fundamental building element. Referencing the architectural language of figures such as Mies van der Rohe, Alvar Aalto and Le Corbusier, she approaches the brick not only as a structural unit, but as a modular system through which space, rhythm and balance can be constructed.
Within her practice, the brick becomes a starting point for stacked and carefully composed sculptures. By combining variations in scale, proportion and arrangement, Schumacher creates works that echo the clarity of modernist architecture, while introducing a more intuitive and spatially sensitive approach to form.
Rather than working with traditional stone, she employs solid, hand-cast Venetian glass bricks. These range from recognisable rectangular forms to more elongated and fluid shapes, allowing for a broader sculptural vocabulary within the series.
The use of coloured glass is central to the work. Its translucent surface captures and refracts light, creating depth, reflection and subtle shifts in perception. As a result, the sculptures respond continuously to their surroundings, reinforcing Schumacher’s ongoing exploration of the relationship between colour, light and architectural space.
