During her travels through Palm Springs and the wider Coachella Valley, Lisette Schumacher became fascinated by the way the desert landscape transforms under shifting light conditions.
Although the valley floor is known for its dry and warm climate, the surrounding San Jacinto Mountains often remain snow-covered during winter and spring. This unexpected contrast between heat, brightness and distant snow sharpened Schumacher’s attention to the subtle variations of colour present in the landscape.
The desert is a place where light constantly moves. Winds, dust and wide open space create small but continuous shifts in colour perception. While travelling between architectural landmarks in the valley, Schumacher observed how the desert palette slowly changes throughout the day.
In this work, fluid gestures of colour unfold across the surface like currents of warm air. Layers of pink, yellow and orange tones interact with reflective passages of paint, echoing the dynamic atmosphere of the desert landscape.
The result is not a fixed view, but an impression of the desert as a place defined by movement, light and changing colour.
