The Observed draws the eye through an intense field of blue, interrupted by a concentrated orange form near the centre. The complementary colours heighten one another: the blue appears deeper, while the orange takes on the character of reflected light.

Donald Schenkel builds his paintings from numerous translucent layers of oil paint. Here, the gradual transitions are combined with blurred horizontal and vertical marks that seem to shift between distance and proximity. The composition never becomes a recognisable landscape, yet it carries the spatial quality of a horizon or reflection.
