In this series, Lisette Schumacher uses the shape of the arch to frame the image. The arch originates from Roman architecture, where it functioned as a structural element in large civil and public buildings, and was later refined in Renaissance palaces and courtyards.
In Arch I, this architectural form is translated into a painting format, where the curved contour defines the composition and introduces the arch as a symbolic rather than structural element.
