Why we left the city & what we found just beyond it

Root Gallery’s move from Rotterdam to Krimpen aan de Lek

In 2023, we made a bold decision: we left our Rotterdam gallery space behind and moved to Krimpen aan de Lek. It wasn’t just a change of address, it was a step toward something more sustainable, more personal, and more in tune with the way we want to work.

We didn’t move into a turn-key solution. Quite the opposite: for the past two years, we’ve been in full renovation mode. The building was stripped, redesigned, re-insulated, and slowly, it became ours. For the past 1.5 years, we’ve quietly welcomed visitors by appointment. But now, for the first time since the move, we’re working towards a full public programme again. And that feels like a milestone.

A space that works

It’s a space that simply works: practical, welcoming, and designed to support both exhibitions and behind-the-scenes activity. Upstairs, visitors enter straight into the exhibition space. Downstairs, we have around 140 m² of walls dedicated to our full stock: a rotating, curated selection of available works by all represented artists. It’s a space that encourages lingering, looking, and unexpected discoveries.

A conscious choice

We left behind a building with single-glass windows, an ancient heating system, and a lot of wasteful energy use. In Krimpen, we’ve taken a different path. We’ve removed the gas heating, insulated walls, roof and ceiling, installed solar panels and rainwater collectors, and we’re far from done. Wherever possible, we reused or recycled materials from the building itself, giving old elements a second life in a new context. Sustainability is not a buzzword here; it’s part of the foundation.

Just outside the city

We’re still close to Rotterdam, but without the city’s noise and distractions. You can drive and park easily, or take the Waterbus from Rotterdam – yes, you can bring your bike – and enjoy a short ride followed by a peaceful cycle along the dike.

There’s more to see while you’re here. Think Kinderdijk, nature island De Zaag, or one of the nearby forest playgrounds and walking routes. There are great local spots for lunch or coffee, and we’re always happy to share our favourites.

Looking ahead

This new space gives us room to grow: not in size, but in ambition. We dream of adding a workshop behind the gallery, perhaps even hosting an artist-in-residence. And above all, we’re committed to making Root Gallery a place where artists, collectors, and curious visitors can meet in a setting that feels personal and relaxed. We’re not a white cube, and that’s intentional.

Ready for what’s next

After two years of building, stripping, sanding, painting, and planning: we’re back. This autumn marks the start of a new chapter, with exhibitions, events, and a renewed programme.

We’d love for you to be part of it. Throughout the summer, you're welcome to drop by on Friday or Saturday afternoons (13:00–17:00) or get in touch to schedule a visit. We’re open, we’re ready, and we can’t wait to welcome you.
