In her series of glass sculptures, Lisette Schumacher explores the brick as a fundamental architectural element. Inspired by modernist architects such as Mies van der Rohe, Alvar Aalto and Le Corbusier, she translates the modular logic of the brick into a contemporary sculptural form.
By casting solid glass bricks in different colours and proportions, Schumacher creates carefully balanced compositions that echo the rhythm and geometry of modern architecture. The familiar form of the brick becomes a starting point for investigating proportion, repetition and spatial relationships.
Working with handcast solid glass allows Schumacher to engage directly with light. Transparency, reflection and colour interact within the material, creating subtle shifts depending on the viewing angle. The sculpture combines the clarity of architectural structure with the depth and luminosity of glass, transforming a functional building element into a quiet spatial object.
