For her new series of glass sculptures, Lisette Schumacher explores the brick as a fundamental building element. Inspired by modernist architects such as Mies van der Rohe, Alvar Aalto and Le Corbusier, who used the brick as a modular structure to build efficiently, Schumacher translates this concept into a contemporary sculptural language.
By casting solid glass bricks in various shapes, she creates stacked and balanced compositions that echo the rhythm and geometry of modern architecture. The brick’s simple form becomes a means to explore proportion, repetition and translucency.
Using coloured glass as a surface allows Schumacher to work with light in a tactile way. The material’s luminous depth and reflective qualities give each sculpture a sense of movement and illusion, transforming an industrial reference into a meditative object.
