From the series Coachella views
Lisette Schumacher developed this series after travelling through Palm Springs, Cathedral City and Desert Hot Springs. The desert landscape of the Coachella Valley revealed a striking contrast between the bright warmth of the valley floor and the snow-covered peaks of the nearby San Jacinto Mountains.
While driving through the valley to visit historic modernist homes, Schumacher became increasingly aware of how dramatically colour and atmosphere shift throughout the day. Bright desert light, strong winds and vast open stretches of land constantly alter the perception of colour and space.
In this work she translates those fleeting observations into a layered composition of translucent colour, fluid gestures and subtle reflections. Soft pinks, yellows and warm gold tones move across the surface like shifting air currents, suggesting the movement of light across the desert landscape.
Rather than depicting a literal view, the work captures a moment within the desert atmosphere, a brief alignment of light, colour and landscape.
