The Between the Desert and the Ocean series at Root Gallery delves into the balance between two vast, contrasting landscapes, capturing the essence of Morocco's Atlas Mountains. Using concrete mixed with magenta and ochre pigments, each piece is carefully layered on a rose-tinted oval mirror, achieving a tactile, almost geological quality that mirrors the rugged textures of desert and mountain. The mirror introduces an ethereal quality, reminiscent of the ocean’s expanse and its reflective depth. This fusion of raw concrete and delicate mirror creates a harmonious duality - where earthy tones meet fluid, reflective surfaces - inviting viewers to reflect on the connections between land and sea, solidity and fluidity. The Between the Desert and the Ocean series presents a unique, contemplative experience, blending landscape-inspired materials and textures with an elegant, modern twist.

Gold coloured mirror and concrete
Never Lost I is part of Quinda Verheul’s newest sculptural series, exploring the fragility and interconnectedness of nature. This monumental wall piece (180 x 140 cm) is made from a gold-coloured mirror and sculpted concrete, forming a layered visual field that reflects both the viewer and their environment.
Inspired by the writings and philosophy of 19th-century polymath Alexander von Humboldt, Quinda Verheul reimagines his vision of the world as a unified, living whole, a system where climate, land, cosmos and human presence are intrinsically linked. Through her material choices and reflective surfaces, she invites us to consider how shifting landscapes mirror internal transformations, and how we, like Humboldt, might learn to see connection in fragmentation.
