Spatial Shade Segment I is a blue geometric glass and mixed-media sculpture by Lisette Schumacher. A curved upper edge, angled sides and a concave lower edge define its fan-shaped silhouette. Intense blue colour is crossed by fine, flowing white lines, creating a sense of movement within the compact architectural form.
Part of Spatial Shade — Segment and Arch, the sculpture takes its starting point from the shaped brick. The curved brickwork and ornamental façade reliefs of the Amsterdamse School inform the series, with references to architects Jo van der Mey, Michel de Klerk and Piet Kramer.
Schumacher translates this building element into solid, hand-cast Venetian glass. In Segment I, the contrast between the precise outline and the sweeping blue-and-white composition connects architectural structure with an expressive use of colour.
