In this glass sculpture from Stellar·Magnitude, Francisca Snel explores darkness, artificial light and our changing view of the night sky. Layers of deep green, turquoise and transparent glass surround fine traces of copper, which appear suspended like lines or fragments of an unknown celestial body.

The series was inspired by Snel's experience of moving from Rotterdam to rural Friesland and becoming increasingly aware of the contrast between urban light pollution and a truly dark sky. The copper also refers to conductivity, electricity and the technology behind artificial illumination.

As natural light moves through the sculpture, its transparent and coloured layers continually shift, creating an artwork that changes depending on its surroundings and viewing angle.
