The horizontal form of Stellar Magnitude 3 draws the eye through layered bands of blue, green and amber glass towards a dark circular centre. Fine copper wire runs through the coloured layers, recalling the conductive systems behind artificial illumination. From the side, the sculpture reads as a sequence of curved colour; from its open end, the darker interior comes into focus. Francisca Snel’s work belongs to Stellar Magnitude, a series shaped by her experience of leaving Rotterdam’s ambient glow for the star-filled darkness of rural Fryslân.
